Dear Sir

A short absence from home, has delayed the "early answer" requested, to the invitation from the Executive Committee to be present at the laying of the Corner Stone of the University.

I have long hoped to be present on that occasion, but I fear that circumstances will prevent the consummation of this much-cherished desire and am reluctantly constrained to say that I need not be expected.

And yet my heart burns within me when I think of the glorious day, and I will add, that if any unforeseen change of circumstances

should render my coming possible, I will be there, although not among the expected guests.

Surely every patriot, not to say every [Christian] will be with you in spirit, & devout thanksgiving will go up from many a heart, that this grand [Christian] work is advancing prosperously.
