My dear Sir:

Your favor of the 5th ult. inviting me to be present at the laying of "the Corner Stone of the principal building of the University of the South" on the 10th inst. has just been received, having been, by mistake, addressed to me at Sparta.

It would give me great pleasure to be present at the highly interesting occasion of beginning an enterprize which is destined, I doubt not, to exert the most salutary influence upon American Civilization; but my engagements here are of so binding

a nature as to forbid my accepting your invitation. I can, therefore, only thank you, which I do most cordially, for teh honor of that invitation, and join my hearty wishes with those of all the friends of education in our country for the abundant prosperity of the great Institution, which you and your brethren are about to inaugurate.
