Rev. Franceway Ranna Cossitt was a leader in the Cumberland Presbyterian Church. He himself had been active in the establishment of two Church-affiliated colleges. He first served as President at the founding of Cumberland College in Princeton, KY in 1826. As that college faltered and the Church withdrew its support, he was instrumental in the founding of a new Cumberland College (now University) in Lebanon TN in 1842. of which he also served as the first President. Cumberland University still survives. He was in ill health in his latter years, dying in 1863.
