of your printed circular inviting my
attendance to the laying of the Corner Stone

One senses that the recipient may have been somewhat insulted by receiving a "printed circular" inviting him to the ceremony, and he has responded with a bit of Charlestonian sarcasm masquerading as exquisite politeness, an art attributed to that city in that era.
