DEAR BRETHREN:

In these said times upon which we have fallen, we cannot but feel how vain it is
to trust in an arm of flesh. If ever there was need of prayer, earnest, perserving
prayer to that Almighty Being who is the Supreme Governor of all things, and who
alone can quench the strife of tongues, and still the madness of men, it is now.

Many of you, Beloved, have husbands or sons, fathers, brothers or friends, going
forth, with their lives in their lands, in the defence of all that is dearest to us on earth.
And they OUGHT to go. O give them the charity of your prayers. Follow them, day
and night, with earnest appeals to the Throne of Grace, that they may be protected
from the MANY temptations incident to a soldier's life, and from danger in the stern
hour of conflict,

Pray for the Rulers and People of this Commonwealth, that wisdom and justice
may direct the councils and govern the acts of the one, and unity, harmony and con-
cord prevail among all classes of the other.

Pray for the speedy termination of this unjust, unnatural war, and for the restor-
ation of blessed peace. Pray, also, for your enemies, that God may, in mercy, give
them repentance and better minds.

I know that Christian duty, natural affection, and love of country will prompt, to
many, language more earnest and fervid than I can dictate. To some, however, a
form of prayer may not be unacceptable in circumstances such as these. Subjoined,
therefore, will be found a prayer, which can be introduced into your private devotions,
for those dear to you as life itself; and which may also be used, with such alterations
- will readily suggest themselves, in your family worship, morning and evening,
when you bow yourselves before the God of mercy and goodness.

Commending you to the mercy and grace of Him who will be a Savior and
mighty Deliverer to all them that put their trust in Him,

I remain your affectionate Pastor,

APRIL 30th, 1861. DAVID PISE.

PRAYER.

O thou Almighty God, whose authority is supreme, whose power is irresistible,
bless and prosper the great undertaking in which this Commonwealth is now engaged.
Go forth with our armies, and give them victory and success. Suffer not our sins to
provoke Thee to withdraw from us Thy protection and defence; but send us, in Thy
