confederacy and his lack of confidence in President Davis, remarking that
he is proud, self reliant and stubborn; his confidence that "we have had
abundantly the means to defy the Yankees if they had been judiciously
used"; his belief that even now if the proper means were adopted and
pressed through the proper agencies a recovery could be made. More
