In the Summer of 1860 - Bishop Polk as one of the executive Committee of the University of the South, was employed at Sewanee in making preparations for the laying of the Corner Stone & in providing accommodations for the invited guests. No funds were provided by the Trustees, & he defrayed from this own resources the necessary expenses - Roads were open -ed - Sheds for worker erected/ preparations needed to carry out the design of Invitations printed & distributed - accommodations & food prepared for the guests - From friends he bor rowed money when his own purse was exhausted in paying them in the course of the fall -

One of the workmen employed refused to place some money for which he had no use in his hands as a job of the Uni versity, but wished him to take the amount & give his note for it - this he did - the note bearing I think in its face, to what use the money was applied - part of this money was paid over to & disbursed by Col. Barny (sic) who acknowledged in his accounts to have received some $2500 from Bishop Polk the accounts were made out by the Bishop.

& were placed upon record in the fall of /66 but all these remarks were destroyed - the vouchers which were carefully preserved, shared the same fate - I have been applied for to pay the note due Sherry - & if I had the means would certainly do it - & have referred the holder to Bishop Quintard, as the diocese of Tenn seems to be likely to derive most benefit from the labours of the founders of the University of the South -

The whole amount advanced by Bishop Polk was over $4000, & his family now required the payment - Frances F. Polk
