Hebert, Rue St. Louis and Toulouse.

Feb. 7th - Our "Piece of Perfection" kept us awake the entire
night. Mr. Hilliard got terribly out of patience - vowed this
breaking up of his rest would kill him. Nevertheless, this morning
he is booted and fully adequate to eat his allowance of break-
fast. Take a solitary stroll over the grounds. I draw off some of
the designs of the frames and plats. The gardiner is paid $500
a year. At dinner thought I should faint-dress to tight bro-
cade silk- must alter it. Returned Mrs. Guion's visit- orange
trees laden with fruit. Pretty farden - pyramid of Picayune rose.
Think I will take the courier des Etat Unis.

Feb. 8th- I. H. still continues quite sick. Rain in torrents.
Milleroy puts off east of us, a box of roses- shrubbery, hot house
plants. Bishop gives "Ike" a barrel of molasses. Mrs. Steere,
governess signs for me this morning. What fine opportunities the
Bishop's daughters have! Such an extensive and rare library. I
could linger forever over the books and prints collected in
Italy. We expect to leave in the morning on the Alvarado.

Feby. 9- Waiting all day for the boat. Get off on the Mary
Foley at 2 o'clock in the morning.

Sunday, Feby. 10, Get up at 12 o'clock - doubtless would
have indulged longer but roused by Mr. Hilliard to look at a
Mardi Gras procession- Crowd on board all French- all French,
white and black- Get in port about 10. Determined not to go
ashore till morning.

Monday 11th - Return to the Verandah - shopping all day.
Distracted to see "Jerusalem" - but not possible chance to get a
box. Go to see Mrs. Cushman in the "Strangers" - admirable
