Governors telling to be on the
lookout because there were a
great many men in the vicinity
who were going to attempt the
rescue of Brown and the other
prisoners.

According to the VMI archives, it appears that the only time VMI cadets actually fought in battle during the Civil War period was at the Battle of New Market on May 16, 1854.
