Rt. Rev. Bishop Polk
Beersheba Spgs.
Rt. Rev. Sir,
On Monday I met JB Hawkins & Mr. Tomlinson, and under their observation I ran the line indicated by you, which seemed to be in conformity with {illegible: Sg't?} Hawkins notions, making a straight line of 2 1/2 miles from his gate. After carrying the line through to Cowan, I then ran another line back at the suggestion of {illegible: Sg't?} Hawkins, which bound around toward the creek & came in front of John B. Hawkins' house, between

it and the creek, continued on till I struck Harris' fence about 150 ft to the left of the north of the lane running to his home & ran on till I intersected the first line in the woods near the swamp or pond.
This morning I rec'd a note from {illegible: Sg't?} H -informing me that there was dissatisfaction expressed by Harris & others, at the lines run & requesting me to come down & he would indicate another line that he thought would be satisfactory to all. I took my {illegible: parts?} {illegible: down?} but upon consultation I deemed it best not to incur any further expense in running lines, until you come

on -- Therefore nothing further will be done until you do come & I hope to see you in a day or so.
Major {illegible} & family have gone & 3 rooms are now vacant inviting a visit from your family, which I hope will be accepted at this time.
In great haste
Most respct'y yours
Chas. R. Barney
