It is a first principle at once of American politics and of American Churchmanship that the civil and the religious powers are separate and distinct. Let any other principle be admitted, and the Church is in worse position that the English Establishment are become distinctly Erastian. Carry out this principle: let the State assume to control our legislation so that it shall conform to hers, and where will we find ourselves in the matter, say, of marriage and divorce?
