The limits of the several Patriarchates were distinctly defined by the General Councils, and each Provincial Council determined the rights of those within its own limits. No individual diocese, so far as I am aware, has ever claimed the right to withdraw itself from its proper province. I need not dwell on the exceeding importance of guiding our course by precedent. In precedent we have the collective wisdom of the
