21. January/38 Sunday - Third Sunday after Epiphany - beautiful, clear, cool morning. At my request, the school room was prepared and notice sent to the leading Episcopalians of worship this morning. About 20 assembled, men, women and children - all the service and preached on the faith of Abraham. Mr. Duncan a vestryman called upon me. Had a full house in afternoon at Presbyterian meeting. Preached "I have fought a good fight." Tea Colonel Hunt's, a few families, and no church can offer here a salary of $2,000.00! I went after tea to hold a service at Mr. Skipwith's at his request as his wife, _____ could not attend Church today. A room full attended. We sang part of Bishop's evening hymn - I read Part 3 Chapter St. John's Gospel and commented particularly on "God so loved the world," and then read from the Prayer Book the family prayers. Afterwards Hottam was sung.
22. Monday. I am in great difficulty. Ought friendship keep me here ten days longer, when all my duties at the North are considered? I will however, rest quietly till evening.
