Tallahassee June 1860.

Dear Sir,

I have fixed my heart on Sewannee as the place where I would like to spend the remnant of my life, chiefly with a view to educate my two little sons; but "[res augusta domi?]" almost preclude the hope of realizing my aspiration, unless I can get some employment that would add to my resources.

A situation in the fiscal defaltment would be acceptable for one. I have been Comss'r. of this State, & [resigned?] the office. It is now offered to me again; but I am so much disgusted with political matters that no necessity, short of that which impelled the poor Apothecary to sell poison, can induce me to re-enter a loathsome arena.

Very respectfully & sincerely yr [signed]John Beard[/signed]

Bishop Elliott
