My Dear Bishop
Your very kind invitation of Sep 5th to be present at the laying of the corner stone of your university, by some Post Office blunder, has but just reached me.
I am gratified by this assurance that I am not forgotten by my Southern friends, among whom two thirds of my

ministry thus far have been spent, & the more so as my heart & sym pathies ever have continued (as they ever will remain) with you, no less truly than when I was one of you. I rejoice truly at the success of your noble enterprise & shall be but too happy to witness the ceremonies of that auspicious & ever to be remembered day. Nothing, unless a providen tial hindrance, will prevent my being present.

Dear Sir.
Your favor of the 3rd Inst came to hand this morning requesting my presence at the laying of the corner stone of the "Southern University," at "University Place" Franklin county, Tennessee. on the 10th of this month. Being a warm friend of the University, wish= ing it every success and hoping I may live to see it in a flourishing condition, equal, if not surpassing any institution in the Union, Prov= vidence permitting I expect to be present.
