the laying of the Corner-Stone of the
principal building of the University
of the South. By the date of this, you
will see that it is impossible for me
to be present,-- your invitation of the
3rd Oct. having only reached me by
the last mail. Even if I had re=
cieved your note in time, my en=
gagements here would have prevented
