Liberty Hill, Dallas Co. Ala

Sept. 28th 1860

Rt. Rev'd. J. H. Otey, DD. L.L.D.

Dear Sir,

I hereby ac-
-knowledge the rec't of an invitation, (& ac-
-companying "card") to be present on the
occasion of laying the Corner Stone of
the principal building of the "University of the
South." I observe the P.S "an early answer
is requested;" & this justifies me in presum-
ing to trespass on your valuable time --

It would afford me the greatest pleasure
to able to be present at the proposed ceremony,
and nothing but unavoidable & prior en-
-gagements would prevent me. If you
can remember {illegible: personally?}{underlined} so humble an
individual as myself, you will be able
to recall to mind the course pursued by
me, at {insert symbol:}the Convention of the Diocese of Ala,
held at Huntsville. I fear that you mis-
-took my intentions & motives on that occa-
-sion. I can, now as then, honestly say
that I believe this great enterprise has
claims upon every man in the Southern
States, & that its success is fraught with
more advantage to our section of the U.S.
