Rev. J. H. Otey D.D.

University Place Tenn.

My Dear Sir;

Your polite
invitation to me to be present
at the laying of the corner stone
of the University of the South, was
duly received, & the compliment
conveyed in it did not fail to
excite feelings of the highest gratifi-
cation. I believe it was truly & prop-
erly appreciated, but yet, on account
of very pressing & urgent professional
engagements I must forego that rare
& great pleasure, that, I know, its ac-
ceptance would afford me.

The progress of this stupendous enter
-prise, from its very inception, has
excited the highest interest & the warm
-est sympathies with me, and I do
hope & pray that the Lord may bless it
& make it a fountain whence will
