I am much obliged for your kind invitation to attend the laying of the corner stone of the principal building of the University of the South, & am sorry that my parochial duties are such as to prevent me from leaving home at that time.

I am in receipt of yours of the 1st instant as Chairman and in behalf of the Executive committee of the Board of Trustees of the Uni =versity of the South, requesting my "presence at the laying of the corner stone of the principal building on the 10th instant."

I feel honored by the invitation and with pleasure accept it, hoping that nothing will occur to prevent me from being present.
