My dear Bishop
I have rec'd to-day your kind invitation to be present at the laying of the corner stone of the Principal Building of the University of the South.
Were it not that the day ap-pointed is the same with that of the meeting of the Board of Missions at N. Haven, which I have made arrangements to attend, I should certainly accept your in-

vitation. It would give me great pleasure to meet you & those who will be present with you on that occasion -- & I much regret that I cannot have it.
Remember me affectionately to Bishop Polk & such others of our brother bishops as shall be with you.
Your friend & brother
