THE UNIVERSITY OF THE SOUTH--Inter Office Correspondence

Date 17 January 1982

Memo to Mrs. E. N. Chitty

From Douglas Pascall

{in red ink:} noted ABC

Dear Betty Nick:

The following passage was sent to me by Jeff Kendall (C 81) , whose grandfather had copied it out of a newspaper in the archives of the library in Columbus, Ohio (paper so brittle he wasn't allowed to attempt a Xerox copy) .

From the Democratic{underlined} Union{underlined}, West Union, Ohio, 14 September 1860:

University of the South -- Six hundred thousand dollars have already been subscribed and paid for the Grand University of the South, in which ten dioceses are represented. Ten thousand acres of land have been purchased at Sewanee Mountain, Tennessee.

Not much of a note, and probably you have dozens of like things in hand, but possibly not from West Union, Ohio. At any rate, I thought you'd be interested.
