In the year 1858, the Bishops of Tennessee, Louisiana, Georgia, Florida, Texas, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Alabama, and Arkansas,--impressed with the fact that throughout that vast extent of territory (greater than half the area of Europe, and comprising a population of 7,000,000 of souls) not a single College existed where the young men, who were to form and influence society in these States, might receive an education based on the principles of the Church, or where candidates for Holy Orders might be trained,--projected a University on a scale of great magnitude.
