Dr. Sir : Gen. [I]. Gorgas, Chief
of the Ordnance Dept. during the existence of the late Confederate Sates Govmt., has been recommended for the position of Head of the Interior Dept. of the University, and I take pleasure in giving my testimony to his high qualifications for the position. Gen. Gorgas is not only thoroughly instructed in the various handles of Mathematics, but is familiar with [their?] [madical?] applications. His mastery of [antilley?] and Ordinance has familiarized him with many of the practical details of Chemistry and Natural Philosophy and trained his mind to [habdi of Ilady?] and analysis.
He achieved both in the U. S. Army + in the Confederate Army a high reputation for efficiency and zeal in the execution of every task. He is methodical and laborious in the performance of his duties and is a gen-tleman of integrity, collect [department?] and [?] charader. My opportunities of knowing Gen. Gorgas commenced in 1847 during the American war, when I served with him for several months in the same battery.
