Having just learned that Genl. Gorgas has been appointed Chief of the Junior Department of the Institution over which you preside, & what the opinions of these, qualified, by personal knowledge, to speak of his fitness for this position, might be useful to his interests, I beg leave, briefly, to say, that I know him well, and entertain a very high estimate of his abilities, and the highest respect for his characer as a man. My duties, during the Southern struggle for Independence, brought me into business and social relations with Genl. Gorgas, and enabled me to judge of him correctly. His duties were important and arduous, demanding a rare combination of talent, information, scientific

knowledge, energy & method; and be fully responded to the just expectations of the Government. He is a gentleman of pure character and exalted worth; and, in my judgement, posseses qualifications for the position referred to, in your University, which are rarely found in one man.-
