Sweating down the dust-filled lanes in summer, wading
through the depthless mires of spring, suffering the
chills and aches of winter, Bishop Green rode on.

On horseback, by cart, buggy or wagon, even on
steamships, in any kind of weather at any season of the
year, William Mercer Green was determined that the
Episcopalians of Mississippi were to be visited. He even
secured passes to visit behind enemy lines and often ignored
the plagues of fever. He was away for weeks, even
months, at a time as he traversed the state from brorder
to border, making the rounds at least once a year.

IT WAS NOT UNUSUAL for him to have to pause
along the way sometimes, perhaps for several days, to
regain his strength as he suffred from vertigo, and was
stricken with some regularity.
