NEWS ITEM

MAY 25 1970

Sewanee relatives have received an invitation to a reception on the
Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine "Rainbow Rood" which will be
dedicated to the Institute's "good friend, Gretchen Green" on May
twenty-first. The Institute is located in New York where Miss Green
makes her home. She is known in Sewanee as the granddaughter of Bishop
William Mercer Green (1798-1887), being the youngest daughter of his
youngest son, the late Rev. Stephen Herbert Green. The dedication is
the latest in a long series of honors bestowed on Miss Gretchen. For
recognition of her services in the United Kingdom Miss Green has been
made a Member of the Order of the British Empire. The explanation of
her pen name "Gretchen" in preference to her given names "Mary Cornelia"
can be found in her autobiographical book, THE WHOLE WORLD AND COMPANY.
Atitle of that magnitude is eminently suitable for her world-wide
reminiscences.
