Mr. William M. Cravens 402 South College Street Winchester, Tenn. 37398

Dear Mr. Cravens:

Since I was the person who contributed the item about Cousin Gretchen Green to the SEWANEE SIREN, perhaps I can clear up the matter. There are two Bishop William Mercer Greens. The one you knew was the grandson of the first bishop of the Mississippi. The bishop referred to in the SIREN item was the first Bishop Green (1798-1887) whose youngest son was named Stephen Herbert Green.

You are quite correct in the names of the later Bishop Green's sons. Perhaps you did not know that the twins are no longer living. Duncan Cameron Green's son, Duncan, graduated from SMA in June 1970. His mother has married again and is now Mrs. Craig Reynolds of Jackson, Mississippi.

The Bishop Green you knew was born in Greenville, Miss. 7-12-1876 and died in Jackson, Miss. 11-12-1942. I understand he spent summers at Sewanee in one of the cottages on the site of his grandfather's home KENDAL. This summer home was bought by Miss Helen Averett and most recently has been occupied by the young Doswells.

The third son of the Bishop you knew, William Mercer Green, was reported as living in Phoenix, Arizona, but the Alumni Office can verify his present address. He married Margaret Williams and has two daughters.

This statement must have confused you and I am glad you inquired. My husband never had the privilege of meeting the 4th bishop of Miss. although we met his twin sons on visits to Jackson while doing research on the life of the 1st bishop.

Cousin Gretchen has sent us the full text of the speech on the occasion spoken of in the SIREN. Please stop in when you are on the Mountain and we shall be glad to show you our Green family pictures and memorabilia.

My husband, whom you have met, is the great grandson of the first bishop Green.

Very truly,

Mrs. Armand J. de Rosset
