our trip out. The bush track skirts the inside of the harbour and leads finally beyond it to the open sea on the south. The distance is no more than 20 miles though through far torturous discomfort for nearly three hours it seemed as far as Hades. From the long grass wallabies scooted in all directions providing us with a little excitement thank goodness! The convoy of trucks came to a dead end, above which lay our tents on the crest of a steep hill. In on trip I carried all my equipment & gear which almost strained my back. Honestly, for the whole 500 yds climb it was as steep as that place along the beach at Noosa. Luckily there were a few small trees to hang on to. Instead of all my section coming with me, I had only one from each platoon. They are great company, honey. Neil Donaldson (a 61st lad) has a Kodak movie camera, taking colour films. It took us only a few hours to tidy up & arrange sentries. Before long a native sidled up and offered to do our work, besides bring fruit and fish. He said his name was Morea, and wished to be friends with us. He cutely calls me 'tabida Alain', and it sounds well too. As we are strictly rationed with water we decided to
