The church was filled to capacity & the service began with a hymn. I've never been so near to ecstacy, even, as when I heard their harmonising. It was just perfect, and I glanced aside to see if Nev was thrilled too. When he noticed me looking, he was so overcome he didn't even speak for my expression made him guess my feelings too. If you closed your eyes you would swear a giant organ was playing. The men's voices sounded like Paul Robson's, and the women's high & nasal. We three are conspiring to sneak off from camp another Sunday just to hear them sing again. We arrived back in camp for a
wonderful dinner of fresh fruits & fish. I had only started eating when I noticed a boat on the horizon. I rang the camp immediately & reported it. As it came closer I recognised it as the boat expected from Darwin. During the afternoon our native visitors arrived, 20 in all, and they squatted on the ground outside our tent. (A great way to entertain, isn't it,
but they're used to it.) I might tell you that an account of its abundance of fruit & fish, I haven't see one case of disease in the entire tribe of 600. The cunning old fox brought
along his young daughter, Kukummi Rakatana, so I let her do our washing, to keep her busy. We gave them some camp-pie we didn't use, for tea & a few broken biscuits. They then asked us to go
