on a walkabout to Kouderika Hanna [?] to meet their big chief. For diplomatic reasons I thought it would be wise, so off we went in Indian file along the narrow path. Blow me down, if Kukumuku doesn't wrangle her way in front of me. I even caught her combing her hair once. I wondered about the incident for awhile and suddenly she turns around and whispers "I want smoke, Kabida". I rolled her one, took a few puffs from it and gave it to her. At the village we were presented with a giant yam a piece. Our cunning host asked
us for them before we were half way home. Anyway they were too heavy. We followed them back to Porebada and asked them to sing for us. Soon after they started singing nearly fifty others came along & joined in. Then they gave a demonstration of a wallaby dance. One chap imitated a wallaby with a few feathers in his dabua, another, the hunter carrying his spear. When we got over our fright we split our sides laughing at their antics.
On Monday the phone failed altogether, so I had to find my way to our neighbours at Mapa Mapa, ten miles distant. Again the same old bike saved the situation. Ten miles over
mountains & on a bush track is no joke on a hot day. 2 1/2 hrs riding ended the trip. The day previous our friends had seen a ten foot black snake in one of the swamps I passed. Before
