Owing to the steep gullies encircling the adjacent hills, it is necessary to walk the first half mile. I set off & called "Namo Ba Mahuta" again, joining my four men. We had gone only a few paces when they formed up in four or five files behind us. The loading party demanded to know the reason for our popularity; we laughed and kidded them it was personality plus. Across the main gully we climbed aboard and then really said good-bye. Two young chaps asked me for a lift to Tanana Village & I said it would be ok. When the truck stopped on the opposite shore of the harbour they found no canoe awaiting them. Quite casually they expressed their intention of swimming the mile between. (The entire Australian fleet sheltered inside this immense harbour last war & there was room for many more.) To end our perfect week the truck stopped outside the baths where we had an hours swim. The tide was as is sometimes frequent - 14 ft above low water mark. The water was as clear as crystal and the sun hotter than ever. Together, this made it the best swim, ever.
Nance, darling, I might add that following our fruit & fish diet the change in my complexion is wonderful. The exercise through swimming and hill climbing has taken the loose flesh away. I compared my skin with a full blooded native's, and you couldn't tell any difference in the colour. (of course he wasn't the black type) It's now 4.30, honey and the mail has been closed for 3 hours, but I'll send this into town with the guard truck. Your letter read beautifully, honey.
