But we got through & they did again
& again and concealed their fears &
tears for the inevitable tragedies in
a way most admirable. Are these
the reputedly panic stricken savages of
early war days? T hey are, & what a
victory over themselves! And their
hate of the Jap is a smouldering fury.
We admire their character in refusing
to succour a p.o.w ['yet' crossed out] & excuse their
ignorance of Christianity. Inborn
logic is their religion there.
Of recent months I have had to rely
on my own resourcefulness in respect
& medical responsibilities. I love the
work intensely & my diagnosis formulae
has been encouragingly correct.
