Outward Bound

October 11th

Holidays over, and work beginning. And I am actually glad, even holiday making gets wearisome, the days drag, and a longing for action sets in.

To day I bade good bye to the old folks, and the old place and set my face shipward. My Saratoga trunk, filled to its utmost and lashed with a rope, knobbled with mysterious knots and hitches, is stowed safe and snug. same table reminded me of a very pleasant time in Cookstown but that has nothing to do with a Voyage to Australia. Later, I called down at the ship, the crew sign articles tomorrow at 4 o'clock, at which function I must present myself. Turned in with Bertie tonight, the bed is so narrow that we overlap at the sides, luckily, however I do not squirm or kick in my sleep so there is no danger to limb or life by reason of midnight somersaultings: for his own sake and that of peace, I hope Bertie is also a sound sleeper. If I fell out and did not waken I would not object to finish my slumber on the floor, (alas my poor brother - If I did wake)

October 12th am

Went down to the ship after dinner. There are sailors and firemen waiting here already in the hopes of a berth. It is only two o'clock, and signing on takes place at 4 o' clock, it is usually six o'clock before the last man is signed on.

At 4 o'c the shipping master came down - the Rules and Regulations relating to their engagement, time, and ports, also the scale of provisions +c were read aloud by him to the assembled crowd of sailors.
