Superintendant Report May 1893 To the Honorable the Board of Park Commission Gentlemen The following is respectfully reported concerning the work upon the respective Parks under your management. General. The department is frequently urged that it should call upon Citizen property owners, especially those controlling the Lake Washington East Shore for the purpose of specifically determining who are desirous of ceeding to the City the right of way through their land and upon what condition they desire to make such ceedure Several have repeatedly stated to this department their wish to give the City such a right of way for a Park Driveway but that defined action can only be determined upon by the sentiment of the whole length of the shore involved. the topography of this shore is on file in the department though section lines have not yet been located which work will need to be done after the owners give consent to the general plan. partly carried out upon the topographical maps and plans mentioned

2 Kinnear Park. The work upon this park has been general maintenance of the lawns and the walks. The further preparation and planting out of the flower beds and borders. for the latter work the nursery gardeners were detailed in their execution The large and small trees as also the shrubbery planted out this spring are at the present time doing well. In regard to the claim made against the City for gravel the following is submitted. Upon careful inspection of the location of the so called gravel pit It seemed doubtful whether said pit is upon land designated as Lots 10. 11.& 12. block 2 of the Northern Addition to the City of Seattle Upon Consultation with the City Councilor it was advised that the location be first fully determines. this the Honorable Board of Public Works authorized to be done by the City Engineer upon our application the survey involved is not yet done. When done the City Engineer will furnish us with the results: Denny Park. Your instructions to proceed with the making of Plans for the Park are being complied with- data necessary is addedto the survey on hand - topography for study is 2

3 Completed and the plan under consideration and study. City Park and Nursery. Reports the continued routine work and care of the Greenhouse and Nursery. the new stock obtained last fall is in good condition, indicating but a very light percentage of deaths The coniferous plants have arrived having been six weeks on the road from New York alone, by reason of which it was anticipated that the entire invoice woud be spoiled That however does not prove to be the case. The plants are now being sorted and classified in order to determine the amount of damage in order to prepare a claim for same against the Rail Roads concerned in their transportation. The following exchanges are recorded this month in this department from Messers Peterson & Marriot for exchange 650 bedding plants From Mrs I Palmer for exchange 4 Cytisus Viburnum and 4 Rosae(moss) From E O Johnijul for exchange 70 assorted Canna Crosy Bulbs all of which add tothe varieties in the nursery and for which spare stock is to be in time exchanged 3

4 The department placed on record the visit of Monsieur M L deVilmorin of Paris a distinguished botanist and horticulturist. Special Commissioner of Horticulture from the French Government to the Chicago Exposition. Mr T N Haller on behalf of the City placed his launch at Monsieur deVilmorin's disposition and the department guided his tour over Lake Washington where valuable specimans were collected by him. Monsieur deVilmoran will make arrangements both with the ]]Horticultural Governmental Gardens of France]], as also with Professor C S Sargent of the Arnold Arboretum Jamaica Plains Mass, for mutual exchanges with the Park Department of Seattle Respectfully E O Schwagers Supt & engineer Expenditures for the month of May 1893 [teninimelle] $468.8 Supplies $201.07 ___________ $669.92
