W. T. Chalk wrote the Mayor and Council about the "disagreeable nuisance" in Yesler between Houghton and Randolf Streets. O. C. McGray of the Health Department reported that the nuisance was waste from a "Chinese Wash House." His commentary addresses the health problem attached to all of the laundries in Seattle. I have examined the premises referred to in this complaint and find it to be slops flowing from a Chinese Wash House. There is no sewer on Yesler Ave or this Property to connect to, and the slops and filth from the Laundry flows over the gravel and runs down and along under the sidewalk, creating a very Dangerous Nuisance which cannot be abated by digging Cess Pool or receptacle in the ground. There are several laundries located in the City of Seattle where there are no sewerage connection all of which are a public nuisance and a menace to the health of the neighbors in their immediate locations. Very Respectfully O. C. McGray Deputy Sanitary Officer
