To the Common Council of the City of Seattle;
Gentlemen: I beg to return herewith without my approval "Ordi-
nance No_ to appropriate $300. to secure the use of Hoolk& Ladder
apparatus" Passed by your Honorable Body September 1st 1883.
My objectionto Ordinance is that the ordinance does not provide
that the same shall be drawn out of any fund. Without such a
provision the Clerk would have no authority to drawn a Warrant
now would he know what fund to draw the Warrant upon.
The Warrant to be drawn under this ordinance should be drawn
upon the Fire fund and the Ordinance should so provide.
The printed Ordinances now used by the Council for app-
priation will suggest the change required.
This change can be made at once when the Ordinance will
be approved.

And now the Council proceeds to reconsider said Ordinance thereupon
after due consideration the same is adopted over the veto fo the Acting
Mayor upon the following vote to wit: In favor of adoption Clancy,
Harris, Ranke & Wusthoff. Against adoption Day & McDonald

From the Street Committee on the petition of Alfred Snyder et al
recommending certain changes in the grade elevations in Madison
Street as prayed for. Adopted & the Attorney is hereby insturcted
to submit a proper Ordinance therefor.
From the Street Committee on the petition of V Schmidt et al recom-
mending certain changes on the grade elvation on 9th Street as prayed
for. Adopted & the Attorney is hereby instructed to submit a proper
Ordinance therefor.
Applications for Licenses
Ordered that licenses be issued as follows to wit:
Alden & Fiske for a Billiard Table for 3 months from Aug 15
Charles Anderson for Retail Liquor for 3 mon ths from Sept 1
The application of J C Conrad for Retail Liquor is referred to Comtee on Licensing
