736 JOURAL OF THE PROCEEDINGS OF THE Jan 15 1886 Be it remembered that on this 15th day of January 1886 the Common Council of the City of Seattle meets in its Council Chamber pursuant to law: the following officers being present, to wit: Hon. H. L. Yesler, Mayor and Councilmen R. H. Calligan, J. Furth, Geo. W. Hall, W. A. Harrington, John Keenen, T. W. Lake, Chas McDonald, J. J. Post, and G. W. Young, when the following proceedings were had, to wit: Petitions etc Received Petition of E. S. Ingram et als praying that Lenora Street be vacated from the alley between Front and Second Sts to Second Street. Read and referred to Street Committee. Petition of Mrs. Scurry et als praying that the alley in Block 8 of Maynard's Plat of Seattle be graded to correspond to the grade of Washington Street and a suitable drain be constructed through the alley to connect with the sewers on Washington Street. On motion the petition is granted and the City Attorney instructed to draw and submit the necessary ordinance ordering such improvement. Petition of Thomas Burke praying that the Union Street sewer be extended by a branch sewer into the alley in Block 4 of A. A. Denny's Addition: Read and on motion the petition is not granted. Councilman McDonald voting against said motion. Petition of James W. Norris et al praying that the three Chinese wash houses on the corner of Mill and Fourth Sts be declared a nuisance and abated the same being in the immediate vicinity of a number of private houses; read and on motion othe petitio is granted and the Chief of Police directed to abate the nuisance. Petition of James Monague et al praying that a Chinese on 6th St between Mill and Washington Sts be declared a nuisance and abated. Read and on motion tabled.

737 COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SEATTLE Jan 15 1886 Petition of Mr. L. Wright et als praying that a temporary sidewalk be constructed on the east side of Seventh St. from the Belltown School House to the Sixth St. School House, read and referred to the Street Committee. Petition of R. Russell praying that the license of teamsters be made payable yearly in advance instead of quarterly as at present. Read and referred to Committee on License and Revenue. Petition of the Seattle Lumber and Commercial Co. praying for a renewal of the lease of the wharf at the foot of Madison St. Read and referred to Committee on Streets. Communicaiton from D. T. Denny and Louisa Denny in the matter of the opening of Box Street setting forth that if said st was opened as petitioned for it would pass through unplatted land belonging tot them: read and on motion tabled. Reports Received From Chief of the Fire Department enclosing communication from the Seattle Iron Works offering to furnish seven fire pumps of the same design as those now in use by the City for the sum o $45.00 each. Referred to Committee on Fire and Water. From Custodian of Powder House for month of December. Read and approved and ordered filed. Report of City Treasurer for month of December. Also semi annual report Recd read and referred to Finance com. Committee Reports Received From Committee on Health and Police reporting upon petition of M. Korn et als - that in the opinion the present police force is sufficient in number: Regarding the allowance of $60 to each regular policeman we beliee such allowance coul only be viewed

740 JOURNAL OF THE PROCEEDINGS OF THE On motion Committee on Beach Road given until the next regular meeting of the council to report. On motion the Street Committee is given further time to report on the Terrace Street sidewalk On motionH L Yesler is granted permission to put a sewer in the alley in Block 9 of Maynard's plat to connect with Washington Street sewer. Ordinances An ordinance is submitted by the City Attorney entitled "An ordinance to license the business of selling fruit trees" which after discussion is on motion referred back to the City Attorney. Councilmen Keenen Post & Young voting no An Ordinance is submitted by the Clerk entitled "A special ordinance appropriating money to pay audited bills" which upon due consideration is passed by the following vote viz: In favor of the same R H Calligan, J Furth, Geo W Hall, W A Harrington, John Keenen, T W Lake, Chas McDonald, J J Post and Geo W Young.
