percentage of thise graduating from the Brookeville school attended
either a college or normal school the following year.

The grade schools are not as progressive as the high schools,
but they are better than the grade schools thru out the rest of
the county. There are twenty schools in the district, only three
of them were one room schools in 1913. Since that date conditions
have improved, but it has been imposible to get more recent data
that was accurate. Also, in 1913 the schools in the Sandy Spring
community had the second highest percentage of attendance of any
school in the state. The Bethesda district lead the list with
.1% better attendance than Sandy Spring. The average attendance in
Sandy Spring being 76.1%, while that of the county was 65.9%.

Besides educating themselves the community has educated their
colored population. A school was opened for them in 1865. Since
then three other schools have been opened. They now have four school
in the district, which is the larges number of colored schools in
any district in the county, and the total valuation is $2700.00
which is $1400.00 higher than the next highest district. The
average value of each school in the Sandy Spring district being
$200.00 higher than that of the nearest district.

The schools are receiving intelligent and able help from the
community. The children are being well educated, they are being
trained to become progressive farmers, and will be able to further
the welfare of the community when they become the farmers, the
teachers, and the leaders.
