Description: Two Civil War travel documents pertaining to Edward Lea, of Montgomery County, Maryland. The first is a travel pass valid between June 13 through July 13, 1863 issued by command of Brig. Gen. Martindale and granted to Edward Lea of Montgomery County. The second, dated March 9, 1865 is a letter to the Provost Marshall's offfice in Washington D.C. serving as a character reference for the same Edward Lea to support his request for a pass to travel through picket lines.
