Value of Foreign Coins.
The United States Assay Office has re-
ceived from the Treasury Department a
new estimate of the valye of the stan-
dard coins of the nations of the world,
prepared by Edward O. Leech, Director
of the Mint. The estimate is based on
$1.0657 as the value of an ounce of pure
silver.

Attached to the estimate was the fol-
lowing indorsement by Secretary Win-
dom:
"The foregoing estimate, by the Di-
rector of the Mint, of the values of for-
eign coins, I hereby problaim to be the
values of such coins in terms of the
money account of the United States,
to be followed in estimating the value of
all foreign merchandise imported on and
after January 1, 1891, expressed in any
of such metalic currencies."
