August Tomorrow!! 9.40 Friday. My dear Florence. Edith - & Helen - & all. First you have all been so good about writing. And your letters sound happy and cheerful; so I am trusting all is as you describe conditions. May be you think it has been some time since I wrote. Well it has but there are numerous reasons. Chief among them has been the heat. It has been worse than any I have felt for some time. One could not get into clothes or out of them. Then many things interferred. From tonight I am going to start backward. if you were only in this delightful room where I am I would have so much pleasure in telling you of

what has happened. After many days of heat we arrived here, about six. We are high in the Ozark Mountains. This is a very modern hotel. I have a lovely big room and the most up-to-date bath room. Robert said in his long experience of hotels he had never seen an electric fan in the bath room. This desk by the window is fitted up with every thing. Out this window by me facing East is the Moon. Just now a long express train ran by - and the air!!! it is so cool and bracing. We feel almost as tho' we were in another country. : in the pincushion on the bureau - are two needles. one threaded with white cotton and one with balck. one white button & one black and a thimble ever hear of such a thing? I had never heard of this town of Rolla. Our ride from Columbia, thro' Jefferson City was very beautiful. With views of far away hills. We left St Louis at 8.20 . this a.m. at Columbia. We found Mrs. Smith and the girls. went to lunch. and packed into the two cars and were off. Our trip today was I think 275 or 95. I dont know which. I had the loveliest visit to Mr. and Mrs. Hill. Theirs is a beautiful family intercourse. Just one thing - I will mention, we went to the table & every one stood and Mr. Hill's three daughters, with their arms around him. 1997.0005.0136

While he said "Grace" and it was to every meal. They were just as kind & lovely as possible. Urged my going back via St Louis. - I think I wrote to Edith Thomas from there Mon. evening. Tues. Then to call on Polly Miller. She was home. And very cordial, insisted we go there for dinner Thurs. (my plan has gone on a strike - sorry / then to Maud & Clark's she was not at home. Then to Mary Glasgow's she was away but her lovely Nancy was there. & the baby. Then we went to call on Kathleen we rang and left a note under the door as no one answered.; So sorry not to see her. in the aft. K. Called up to say she was broken hearted at missing us. Could she come see us that evening. but we were going out. I told her R. & I would go next morning. me to an attractive tea room. after a rest we went to the country club. Where our men folks were playing golf Six of us had dinner there. Mrs. Wilsons lawyer made the sixth. he, I thought very delightful. he invited us to lunch next day at the universaty Club. I am sorry about my letter's appearance, I do not find a blotter . except the pad. Guess I will have to use it; after dinner we sat around the swimming Pool and watched the bathers. Maud Streett called up next a. m. Wanted us to go for a call at four. Wished we could take dinner was very sweet & cordial. Mrs Hill sent R. & me with Walter for our calls, both were lovely. Sorry again but have tried three pens. R. wanted to see Florence Streett Shields. We went to her apartment but found she was at the shop where she has a position. She was so sweet & cordial but looked sad. So many things about these calls I want to remember to tell you. We picked up our three men folks & Mrs Hill and went to the Club. to lunch with Mrs Bedell home. and at six Mrs. H sent us with Walter to Charlie Millers to dinner. a lovely one - and dear Charley was glad to see me. said Maud & [Lill?] "would be foaming at the mouth, for hearing missed my visit:" Polly said.
