18 Cloudy & Snow S.E. Monday {January 1} Drove Frank Gilpin out to Ashton on his way home to Balto: Jos Stabler & Wm Scholfield called. Ruth Hill Jr. had tooth extracted. Commenced snowing about 10am. I put my horse in Chas: Porters stable. Took my first nap in the room over the office. Snowed violently all day. Drove to Riverside through a blinding driving snow. Thermometer 18°.

17 Clear N.W. {January 2} Tuesday Snow fell to a depth of 15 inches during yesterday and last night & drifted in many places "fence deep". I plunged through the drifts on horseback as far as cousin M Chandler's where I dined. Recd: letter from Harriet. This has been the heaviest snow fall since the winter of 1856-7 when I graduated in Philad 20 years ago.

7° Cloudy {January 3} Wednesday Went on horseback to Wm Wrights after helping Chas. Ernest & Oliver to break the road out to the main road went to Ashton. Recd: Letter from Isaac & Billy Coale. Wrote to Harriet & to Isaac C Coale.

7° Clear N.W. Thursday {January 4}

Went to Ashton in sleigh driving Frank to Chas' sleigh. Cornelius Leisure & Gilpin Stabler called.

6 ° below Zero Friday N.W. {January 5} Clear

Large party at Saml Hopkin's Ernest & Jimmy Jackson. Reached Riverside from it at 2 o'clock this morning. I went to Ashton to Alfred Lincoln's to Rev Cook's (Spencerville) attended his wife in confinement. Went to Fulford & took tea. Met there Bro's Chas & Jos: & Sister D I being very tired remained all night

15° Saturday {January 6}

Left Fulford after breakfast. Went to my office: Caroline Marryatt brought her little son for advice. Chas Porter called. Made arrangement with him to keep my horse in his stable. Bro's Jus & Chas: & Sister D took tea at E Lea's. Rain & sleet towards evening. Recd: & answered letter from Harriet.

32° Cloudy S.E. Sunday {January 7}

Rained & blew most of last night. Rivers over flow'd. Traveling wretched. Drove in my buggy to Cousin M Chandlee's thence to my office where I spent most of the day - Reading, writing & smoking. Took a nice nap there after lunch. Chas: & Lizzie went to meeting, & Sharon.

20° Monday S.E. {January 8}

Went to Ashton on Frank, taking Little Richard behind me. Drove to Spencerville in A G Thoma's sleigh to Rev: ___Cook's, Afternoon went with Chas: to Sandy Spring & Caroline Marryatt's _ Had Frank shod on the English army plan with movable steel studs. Roads wretched, half frozen, & sloppy. Knee-deep with slush in many places.

8° Tuesday N.W. {January 9} Clear

Drove to Ashton in buggy. Extremely rough traveling. Henson Hill called for advice & med. for wife. Recd & answered letter from Harriet and Charley. Bros: Chas & Jos: broke down in sleigh on way to Ashton. Chas & R came home with me. Called at Henson Hills & prescribed for Annie. Also for Gail _ Smith's baby.

11° Cloudy Wednesday {January 10}

Drove to Ashton calling to see Annie Hill. Extracted tooth for Miss Lena ____ brought to the office by ____ Reiguel from near Spencerville.

Edwd and Deborah Lea took tea at Riverside Recd & answered letter from Harriet & son Charley.

Thursday {January 11}

Drove to Ashton. Called to see Annie Hill. Gilbert Smith called at office. Went to see sick child on Wm Leas place, thence to the "Farmer's Convention" at the Lyceum.

33° Friday S.W. {January 12}

Drove to Ashton, called at Edwd Lea's Wm Wilson's & Henson Hill's. W H Ent & Dr Magruder called. Recd & answered letter from Harriet.

25° Saturday {January 13}

Went to Edwd Leas & Ashton. Made & put up some short window curtains at the office. Took a bath & changed my clothes at my office.

Sunday {January 14}

Richard came after me to prescribe for Hallie who had "strained her back", went down & remained there until near noon, when I drove to Jno: M Smith's where I dined & was kindly entertained until towards night when returned to Riverside.

31° Monday Rain S.E. {January 15}

Went to Edwd Lea's & Wilson William's Thence to Fulford where I dined with Sister B— Hallie & Helen Bentley after which I came to the office. Rainy and disagreeable all day.
