Monday
{January 1}
Drove Frank Gilpin out to Ashton
on his way home to Balto: Jos Stabler
& Wm Scholfield called. Ruth Hill Jr.
had tooth extracted. Commenced
snowing about 10am. I put
my horse in Chas: Porters stable.
Took my first nap in the room over
the office. Snowed violently all day.
Drove to Riverside through a blinding
driving snow. Thermometer 18°.

Tuesday
Snow fell to a depth of 15 inches
during yesterday and last night & drifted
in many places "fence deep". I plunged
through the drifts on horseback as far
as cousin M Chandler's where I dined.
Recd: letter from Harriet. This has been
the heaviest snow fall since the winter
of 1856-7 when I graduated in Philad
20 years ago.

Wednesday
Went on horseback to Wm Wrights
after helping Chas. Ernest & Oliver to
break the road out to the main road
went to Ashton. Recd: Letter from Isaac
& Billy Coale. Wrote to Harriet & to
Isaac C Coale.
