November 13, 1948 - - 987th Meeting

The Enterprise Club

The meeting of the Club was entertained by George A. and Frank F. Willson. We have always before met with the senior member of this pair, George A. Willson, but this time were entertained by younger member at his home.

For the third consecutive meeting the Secretary was not on hand in time to participate in the walk. It might be well for members of the Club to bear these shortcomings in mind at the next election.

After a very fine dinner, which in no way was a drop from the previous standards set by our senior hostess, the members of the Club were called into an executive session for the election of a new member. Roland Stabler's name having been proposed at the previous meeting, a ballot was taken which resulted in an unanimous vote for him to become an active member of the Club.

A letter from Frederick W. McReynolds, submitting his resignation due to poor health, was read. It was moved and carried that his resignation as an active member be accepted with regret and that he be made an honorary member of the Club.

A letter from Frederick W. McReynolds, submitting his resignation due to poor health, was read. It was moved and carried that his resignation as an active member be accepted with regret and that he be made an honorary member of the Club.

A request from the Montgomery County Charter Committee that our Club submit nominations for the new Montgomery County Charter Board was presented. The point was made that this was a political question and as such was not suitable action for us to take. After some discussion it was ruled that this was not partisan politics even though it might be political and it was moved and passed that we appoint a committee to submit candidates for the Charter Board. G. R. Canby, F. L. Thomas, M. J. Stabler, and W. W. Moore were named on this committee.

The Club then adjourned to the living room where our regular meeting was called to order. We had with us as guests R. H. and R. B. Chichester, Lee Willson, Ed Snowden, Thomas Hyde, George G. Willson, F. F. Willson, Jr., and Mr. Hale. We had with us for the first meeting in a long time our reinstated active member S. F. Thomas. Absent members were Jurrey, McReynolds, S. W. Moore, Albert Stabler, and M. J. Stabler.

Questions:

F. F. Willson commented that he thought the group must consist of a rather poor bunch of buisness men....he had been eating off us for 25 years and this was the first time that we had eaten off him. We had been doing all right off his father, however.

F. F. Willson asked when to sell the cattle which were seen on the tour. They are ready for market but most would not sell until a week from Thursday because of the Baltimore Livestock Show.

L. S. Welsey - What is the price of fodder? 8.5¢ delivered.

Wm. Gilpin has lots of good pasture and can buy corn for $5.00 a barrel. Would you buy cattle to food on this pasture for 60 days? No.

L. S. Wesley - How long would you let beef cows run on bluegrass. As long as possible or until the grass is less than 2 inches tall.

F. A. Thomas - Is a building that is on skids personal or real property? Personal.

P. G. Ligon announced that M. J. Stabler has a draft mare that may be had for the use. No takers.

S. P. Thomas asked about oil sprays for fruit trees. One form is used for a dormant spray, and a summer oil is used when the trees are in leaf. Get particulars from W. W. Moore or the spray calendar.

Thomas Hyde asked whether to reseed a bluegrass lawn that was killed by beetles. Yes. Seed now.

Jack Bentley asked whether locust trees 125 years old would make good posts and be worth the cutting. Yes.

November 13, 1948 - - 987th Meeting(Cont'd.)

At this point the meeting of the Club adjourned to meet with Walter Wilson in December.

After the meeting we were shown some very interesting pictures by Mr. Hale which had been taken on some of his trips about the United States and Alaska.

December 11, 1948 - 988th Meeting

The Enterprise Club

The Club met on this occasion with Walter Wilson at his most attractive home overlooking Triadelphia lake. It was unfortunate that the early darkness prevented most members and guests from enjoying the beautiful view from this spot. The house, however, is also most attractive, and a very pleasant social period both before and after dinner was enjoyed in the basement club rooms.

When the meeting was called together after dinner, the following guests were noted: T. Hyde, D. Hottel, Franics Miller, William Hines, U. Hutton, L. Small, and Malcolm White. Absent were Englund, Hurrey, McReynolds, and Albert Stabler Sr. and Jr.

The minutes of the last meeting with Walter Wilson were read and those of the November meeting read and approved.

The committee which was appointed to make nominations for the County Council reported that it had nominated P. G. Ligon and Augustus Selby. These nominees were approved by the Charter Committee. Lacy Shaw commented upon the exceptional fittness of P. G. Ligon to serve on the County Council. It was unanimously felt that he was the type man needed to administer the affairs of the county.

A letter from Jessie McReynolds was read expressing the appreciation of F. W. McReynolds at being made a honorary member of the Club.

A letter from the Sherwood F. F. A. was also read expressing appreciation for the donation which this Club made to the F. F. a. Fair.

Crop prices were given as follows:

Wheat $2.44 Feeder cattle $20.00 - 30.00

Corn 6.00 Lambs 26.00

Hay 25.00-30.00 Calves 34.00

As a matter of interest, the minutes of December 8, 1866 were read.
