Meeting # 1402
May 10, 1986
Questions:
Mr. Oursler said that he hoped we enjoyed the meal he had prepared for us.
Drew Stabler reported that a Canadian Goose had hatched five goslins on the
edge of their pond.
Sam Riggs: Are some of the dairymen that are going out of business going to
buy beef cattle?
Ans: Yes.
John Doody Jr.: With alfalfa hay at $2.50 a bale, how much will that be
for a ton?
Ans: $100.
Mel Crawford: With the dairy cattle "buy-out" by the government, will that
affect beef prices?
Ans: Yes, and it will probably mean beef prices will go down.
Robert Riggs stated that since the nuclear accident in the Russian city of
Chernboyl, he was intrigued by the pictres he has seen on television of
their antiquated farm machinery. In Russia their state farms are run by
their govermment and the collective farms are run by individuals and they
are more productive.
Russian Farmers have a lot of machinery that would be classified as junk in
the United States and they keep trying to repair their "junk".
They use only small quanities of fertilizer and a few chemicals. Grain prices may
go up some here because of their accident.
John Richardson: What is The Maryland Park and Planning Commission paying
for land per acre?
Ans: $3000. and up. They paid $5,100 per acre for two acre zoned land.
Much of the land in the Sandy Spring-Edmor area is zoned five acre.
Stanley Stabler stated that buzzards had killed 18 calves in Frederick County.
Even though you're not suppose to shoot buzzards, I hope the owner of the
dead calves got his revenge.
Mark Buxton: Since it's been so dry, if we have a normal rainfall from now on
can we expect a normal yield from our crops?
Ans: Yes and weed killers need to be washed in by the rain to be effective.
Tim Conner: How much will I need to pay for a rebuilt generator for my old
Ford Diesel tractor?
Ans: $40 to $50.
Adjourned to meet with John Richardson in June.
