John Bentley, who is our President
in the absence of Roger B. Farquhar
called the meeting to order. The minutes
were read and corrected. The minutes
of the first meeting at this place fifty
years ago were read and a summary
of the first years of the Society proved
to be very interesting to the members and
guests. John Bentley who has charge of
the printing of the Forethought reports hopes
to have them ready for the June meeting
Readers. 1st Sarah Kirk was absent M. T.
Kirk read in her place England's great-
-est rainstorm" telling of the destruction
in the counties of Norfolk and Suffolk.
The grain, cut and uncut destroyed,
42 bridges carried away in 24 hours.
A local industry affected by the storm
was canary raising. They are raised by
the working men who keep them in sheds
in their gardens. These were the first
to be flooded and as the highest concern
was the saving of human life, no care
could be given to the birds. 2nd article
"Preserving cut flowers with sugar." A society
of French Chemists makes the statement
that the decay of certain cut flowers can
be retarded considerably by dissolving
sugar in the water in which the flowers
are kept. Chrysanthemums, roses, car
nations are among the flowers benefitted
