2nd reader, Anna Farquhar, read "Asparagus
all the year round" Those who
can have hot-houses, can have it by a
properly arranged system of heat.
Volunteer, E.S. Iddings read an extract
from a letter from Bluefield, West Va. telling
of the mountain scenery and the farming
on hillsides so steep, that one
man has to guide the plough, while
another holds it up with a rope to
prevent it from sliding down hill.

Forethought

It is time now to work
over the whole garden, for the weeds
have out-grown the vegetables. The first
planting having been done, two plantings
of corn should be made each month
to July 1st. Melons should be planted now
if not done "the 1st of May before day."
as I am told is a custom the Irish still
follow; A later planting should be
made about the 15th. My experience
last year was a fine bearing of early
melons, then the drought came
and when it was broken the vines
made a new growth and bloom and
a good crop of large melons came
and I gave away wheel barrow loads
up to Nov 29th. Shall we try a planting
about, August 1st? Plant sweet potatoes
early. Plant flower seed now
and have plenty of flowers.

8. Is it too late to plant strawberries? No
9. What treatment best for lillies of Valley?
If a thick mat, then out & fertilize.
