Falling Green
September 1st, 1931

The August meeting of the Horticultural
Society was held at the Maples the afternoon
of August 4th. Robert Miller, Vice-President,
called the meeting, and the usual order of business
followed. The minutes of the previous meeting,
at Lulworth, were accepted as read.

The first appointed reader, Marianna
Miller
, by request, told us of her recent drive
over a part of England. The rural England of
today, as it stood for centuries, Thtched
roofs and hedges narrow roads. Of Hampton
Court
in all its beauty of blooming flowers.
Heliotropes and lillies abounding in great luxury
and beauty. The absence of unsightly sign-posts
was very noticeable. Helen Hallowell the second
reader being absent Anne Miller told us of the
Garden of Allah, and its reality as pictured by
Hitchens.

A Volunteer Article by Mrs. Allan
Farquhar
told of the passing of two famous Horticulturialists.

Richard Iddings read of a huge Douglas
Fir in California.

Helen Farquhar gave a timely bit of
advise for August, and read from Better Homes and
Gardens interesting facts.

The exhibits deserve more than a
passing remakr. The display showed variety &
quality, a knowledge of how to get results, but
Cloverly out Heroded Herod when it brought to
The Maples a Winsall tomato weighing 1 3/4 lbs.
From GlenLauder fine peaches and plums. And then
the flowers! Just beautiful, roses from Cloverly,
a variety from Ercildown and Edgewood. Gladiola
from The Highlands, Centurias in all their
lovliness with sweet peas, and two rare flowers,
Fire on the mountain, and Bluebird Mysotes, from
Sharon. One paused in the midst of this plenty and beauty, to be thankful we live surrounded
by such blessings.

Mr. Hurry told of the report made by
Department of Agriculture on the specimen of
bug he took to them. They live on rotten wood,
leaf mould and grapevines, but are short lived.
