On August 2nd, the Horticulturists
met at Highlands and
after the reading and adopting of
the last minutes, Helen Farquhar
read of a method of getting rid
of moles by fitting a piece of hose
from the exhaust pipe of an automobile
and putting the other end of
the hose in the mole run then
turn on the motor and let the monoxide
gas do the work. It can
also be used for killing rats in
the same way.
Helen also read that the best time
to trim climbing vines is after they
bloom and we should bear in mind
that there are two kinds. one that
makes its new growth canes right
from the roots + should have the
old canes cut out. That is the small
clustered kind, while the large flowering
ones send out laterals up and down the
old canes + those laterals should be cut
back close to the old stem.
