the raising of ornamental gourds
during the depression to sell on thin
road-side stand & has become so
successful that they sell 600 000
annually, & to-day they are the
largest gourd producers in the
world, raising 600 varieties on 20 acres.
Anne Miller contributed an
account of the commercial vegetable
garden on lonely Hake Island in
mid Pacific Ocean which was not
inhabited until Pan American Au Air
Line made it a stop on the
trans-Pacific Clipper service.
It has built a hotel for passengers
& employees & as these was nilling
food or water on the island both -
had to be shipped in - Summer they
are trying raising vegetable in water
with-out soil & hope ere long to
make it a great success.
Forethought told us that
Oriental poppies can easily be divided
& transplanted this month - also
pyretheum. Watch for small green
worms on evergreen & spray with
nicotine. Plant narcissus bulbs
in August, & some evergreens do
well if moved now. When pine
mice frequent runs of moles, put
powdered arsenic on pieces of carrot
or apple & place in the runs.
